The C64 was launched in January 1982 just 2 years after the introduction of the VIC-20 which was Commodore's first home computer to have a colour display.

Pictured is the first generation C64 which sported the light brown case.   This was replaced in June 1986 by the C64C in a slim beige case.   While both machines were electronically identical the main intergrated circuits were reconfigured into lesser numbers of larger ICs in the C64C version.

The C64 could be used with any colour TV set or a monitor with video and audio inputs.   Joystick ports and on/off switch are on the RHS of the computer.
