VIRUS AWARENESS

Something to be aware of is the VIRUS thing !!!!

  • Generally with straight text e-mail there is not a problem with VIRUSes as they cannot be part of your text in the main e-mail.    The problem arises with other things attached to or embedded into the e-mail.     See also my Post Script.

  • You should should treat with caution any e-mail from someone you don't know personally, especially if there is an 'attachment' to it .     More so if the 'attachment' is in the form of an 'executeable file' (wxyz.EXE).     I've had a virus sent unwittingly from a relation who didn't know their computer was contaminated.     Just as well I had a good Virus Checker !!

  • It pays to update your virus checker at least once a month and more frequently is better.    Most virus checker software allows for 'live updates' from the manufacturer's web site.

  • The likely source of viruses is from the 'Internet' as well e-mail.     If you don't have a current virus checker then 'surfing' the 'net' is always open to getting your computer infected with a virus.

Post Script:    With the proliferation of new and ever increasing variety of virus configurations, it is essential that you counter these with the best virus detection software available.     The most well known of these are probably Nortons Anti Virus and McAfees but there are a number of new comers also including AVG antivirus system by http://www.grisoft.com who have a free for private users version.     The best of these are the ones which check your e-mail for viruses as they are received and BEFORE they actually get into your "In Box".     Check the capabilities before you buy.
