Getting started with a Windows based computer - page 4.

What's on the Desktop?

That is, what are the various icons (the wee pictures with names under them on the main screen) on the desktop for?   These provide ready access to certain things - use a double-click of the left mouse button to access the item.

My Computer This icon provides access to the various storage devices you might have on your computer such as floppy drive, hard drive, and CD drive.   It also allows you to access other folders such as Dialup Networking, Control Panel, etc, - see lower picture.
My Documents This takes you to the folder where you will normally store documents and within that probably use the My Pictures folder for picture and photographs.
Recycle Bin When you delete an item it (generally) goes into the recycle bin.   You can tell if the recycle bin has something in it by its appearance - it has 'paper' in it, otherwise it is empty as in the picture.   You can recover items from the Recycle Bin as long as you haven't emptied it.
Internet Explorer This is the icon you use to connect to the Internet - it is your 'Web Browser'.   From this program you can visit any of the millions of web pages out there on the Internet.   You can use sites on the Internet called 'Search Engines' to find almost anything you can think of really from Amazon or Axles to Zulus and Zylophones.
Outlook Express This is your e-mail program.   With this program you can send messages to anyone else around the world who has e-mail facilities, as long as you know their e-mail address.   You can send pictures either within the e-mail or as attachments.
Note: Some computers will have more than one hard drive, so there will be a C: drive and a D: drive.   They may also have more than one CD drive so the letters will differ for those as well.   Usually the CD drive letter is the next in sequence after the last hard drive letter.

In this picture there is the A: floppy drive, C: hard drive, and D: CD drive.
Other items shown in 'My Computer' are 'Printers' which allows you to add a new printer should you need it.   Then there is the 'Control panel' which allows you to change the look of your desktop, screen resolution, screen saver, and a whole heap of other things.   Dialup Networking is the section that allows you to set up your connection through the phone line to the Internet - you need to have an Internet account with one of the service providers such as (in no particular order of preference) Xtra, Clear, Paradise, Ihug, and so on.
